About
A social enterprise is an organisation that uses business methods with the aim of tackling social or environmental problems, rather than maximising profits for shareholders. The social enterprise sector is perhaps larger than many people would think: there are 62,000 social enterprises in the UK, employing approximately 800,000 people and contributing more than £24bn to the economy. This contribution can remain high even in times of recession since unlike more traditional businesses, social enterprises often thrive in times of economic downturn. This is because they can provide for the needs that arise as a result of recession, for example by addressing issues such as homelessness, unemployment and food security. Social enterprises are therefore unique in that they appeal to social values, can make a strong positive impact and can succeed where other businesses fail.
Focussing on social impact rather than profit in this way may seem like a revolutionary idea, but for many entrepreneurs it is the way forward. The Beyond the Bottom line conference aims to inform people about this new wave of business. During the event participants will have the opportunity to learn from some of the leading innovators in this exciting field and gain an insight into a different way to do business. The conference aims to inspire delegates with interactive workshops and debates, and act as a showcase of cutting-edge radical business practices. These events are organised in a dual-stream system to allow the conference to be accessible to everyone, regardless of background business knowledge.
The conference has been organised by a team of students from the University of Warwick from a variety of degree backgrounds but all with a passion for social enterprise.
